Day 4: Hitting a high note

A Waiata - A song in your heart

My favorite Maori waiata is Haere Mai because I like the tune and we sing it at assembly at my school. Haere Mai means come forth or welcome and can be preformed anywhere so you can do it whenever you want.

    Playing games

The game that I would chose to play is kōruru also known as knuckle bones.

    what you will need:

    - 5 stones around the same size as 20c coin
    - floor space.

    what to do:

Using one hand throw stones up and try catch them on the back of your hand then throw the stone from the back of your hand and try catch it in your palm. If you don't catch any then it is the next persons turn. When you have caught 1 on your hand then you get another turn but this time you have to catch 2 on your hand, if you catch 2 then you try for 3 ect.. the winner is the person who can catch all 5 on the back of their hand and then catch them all in their palm.

In the video my Nan and I are playing Knuckle bones. I would say that my Nan is quite good at knuckle bones and so am I.

    Matatini

I liked all of the Matitini performances because they sang good and performed well but the one that I would choose out of all of them would have to be Tamatea Arikinui because I chose that one because it was the one that the singing was outstanding! It also was the most interesting. The second one that I liked was Te Iti Kahurangi because they were swaying at the same time and their voices were very clear. Last but not least, Te Puku O Te Ika because the Kaea did the clearest singing.

Here are my cousins performing at Matatini in Christchurch in 2015, their group is called Ruatahuna Kakahu Mauku.

Day 3: Its all in the family

    The more the merrier?

I wouldn't like to have 8 siblings because then I wouldn't get my own room and it would be hard to sleep with all the noise.  We wouldn't go out as a family as much like to dinner and I wouldn't get paid as much for chores, also the chores I would do would be 8 times bigger like 8 times the amount of dishes and washing and 8 times the rubbish.  It would be hard for my parents to remember everyone's birthdays so they might forget about my birthday.

Some good reasons about having 8 siblings would be that I would always have someone to play board games with and on Christmas and Birthdays I might get 8 times more presents maybe.

My Grandad is the oldest of 15 siblings! I have over 100 cousins! now that's a lot of birthdays... here is a picture of my Grandads side of my family.

Day 2: It's all in a days work.

    A house or a home?

My house is made of wood with insulation and it has bedrooms, a kitchen, a living rooms, a bathrooms, glass conservatories and a toilet. A wharepuni is a building that has a small door and an open space with no rooms, no toilets, bathrooms or insulation.

    This is a modern house
    This is a Wharepuni

They both have a roof, wood walls and and a front door.

They also both have a place for family to be together and stay warm.

Day 1: Arriving in New Zealand...

     Māui

    3 facts about Māui:
    - Māui's Mum's name is Taranga and his Dad's name is Makeatutara.
    - He had four brothers, Māui-taha, Māui-roto, Maui-pae and Māui- waho.
    - He was looked after by ocean spirits and then raised by Rangi after his mum threw him into the ocean.

My favorite story about Māui is how he bought fire to the world.

Māui had just finished dinner and was left staring at the fire when he wondered how fire was made so being the tricky person he was he woke up when no one was awake and extinguished all the fires in the world. When everyone awoke they wanted to cook breakfast but they saw that there was no fire and didn't know what to do, so they sent Māui to fetch fire. He walked to the mountain of Mahuika and she gifted him a fiery fingernail. With that fingernail Māui carelessly dropped it in the nearby stream. He asked for more untill there was only one left, so Mahuika threw it at Māui in anger. He dodged it and it hit 5 different trees. It caused a huge fire and Māui prayed for his ancestors to put out the fire with rain. He fled with dry wood and rubbed it together to make fire. Now he had fire for the villagers.

           Letter to my Mum

    Dear Mum,
I'm in the middle of the ocean but I'm not having fun though. I've been sea sick for 3 days now and there has already been a storm that washed away some of our food but I'm not hungry because we still have coconut from home. I'm in the 6th waka out of 15. I'm really excited that I'm moving to a new land and to see what that land has. I miss you and i'll send a letter when we get there.
    bye
    from Leo

          Waka Ama

I would like to do waka ama because my arms would get stronger and I would like to be on the water and with friends. My Grandad sailed across the cook straight leading a waka back in the 80's and it would have been cool but scary to go with him.

Here are a few Photos of my Grandad (we call him Mano) when he used to guide the Arahura Waka in Picton in the 1980s
