A Waiata - A song in your heart
My favorite Maori waiata is Haere Mai because I like the tune and we sing it at assembly at my school. Haere Mai means come forth or welcome and can be preformed anywhere so you can do it whenever you want.
Playing games
The game that I would chose to play is k
ōruru also known as knuckle bones.
what you will need:
- 5 stones around the same size as 20
c coin
- floor space.
what to do:
Using one hand throw stones up and try catch them on the back of your hand then throw the stone from the back of your hand and try catch it in your palm. If you don't catch any then it is the next persons turn. When you have caught 1 on your hand then you get another turn but this time you have to catch 2 on your hand, if you catch 2 then you try for 3 ect.. the winner is the person who can catch all 5 on the back of their hand and then catch them all in their palm.
In the video my Nan and I are playing Knuckle bones. I would say that my Nan is quite good at knuckle bones and so am I.
Matatini
I liked all of the Matitini performances because they sang good and performed well but the one that I would choose out of all of them would have to be Tamatea Arikinui because I chose that one because it was the one that the singing was outstanding! It also was the most interesting. The second one that I liked was Te Iti Kahurangi because they were swaying at the same time and their voices were very clear. Last but not least, Te Puku O Te Ika because the Kaea did the clearest singing.
Here are my cousins performing at Matatini in Christchurch in 2015, their group is called Ruatahuna Kakahu Mauku.
